First announced back in 2013, a live action movie based off popular video game series Gran Turismo has been stuck in development hell, but it looks like it has found its way to second gear.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to direct the adaptation which will be developed with Sony and Columbia Pictures. The trade also states that the movie will not be focused solely on driving as per the game, but series lead designer Kazunori Yamauchi has said the film will be about video game player who becomes a racer.
Think The Last Starfighter but with less space.
Gran Turismo first debuted on the PlayStation back in 1997 and has been a flagship title for Sony’s home consoles with Gran Turismo 7 currently in development for the PlayStation 4. Watchman scribe Alex Tse had previously drafted a script for Gran Turismo which is now thought to be completely redeveloped by Kosinski.
Kosinski is also attached to direct The Trials of White Boy Rick, based off true events of a teen drug dealer who became a police informant as well as a sequel to Tron: Legacy over at Disney. However details of that movie have been quiet for a few years now.
No word on a release date for Gran Turismo at the time of writing.
