James Mangold reveals why his HBO adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic The Sandman never happened.
Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comic is a much-respected series with a lot of deep themes and fascinating lore. It is currently being adapted as a TV series over at Netflix but at one time, Logan director James Mangold was going to make a show at HBO.
What happened? Well, according to Mangold, internal politics with Warner Bros. got in the way. Speaking to Discussing Film, he said:
“It’s no secret that I was trying to pull together a version of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. I pitched it to HBO years ago and they bought the pitch as a long form series and then it got undone by a political turf war at WB. Regardless, now it’s happening and I am so happy for Neil who I think is a marvellous person as well as a supremely brilliant artist. His unique vision weaves the psychological, psychedelic, romantic, sexual and fantastical in a way that is both personal and epic.”
