Logan tracking a $60 million domestic opening weekend

February 19, 2017 by Gary Collinson

The reviews are in, with many hailing it as one of the best superhero movies of all time (read Rob Kojder’s ★★★★ review here), and with just two weeks to go before it opens in cinemas, the first box office tracking numbers for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine swan song Logan have now arrived online.

According to Forbes, the James Mangold-directed sequel is tracking a domestic opening weekend of between $55 and $60 million, which would put it ahead of the $53 million debut of The Wolverine, but down from the $85 million opening haul of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Of course, as we’ve seen time and time again, tracking numbers can be wildly inaccurate, and given the glowing reviews, Logan may have a chance of topping the $70.8 million opening of 300 back in 2007, which remains the record debut for an R-rated movie in the month of March.

20th Century Fox’s previous R-rated superhero offering Deadpool opened in February of last year, grossing $132 million across the Friday to Sunday period on its way to becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal. It is set for release on March 1st in the UK and March 3rd in North America.
