Entertainment Weekly is reporting that former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle is teaming up with Cleopatra Films for Free Bird, a movie that will explore the 1977 plane crash that killed front man and founder Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing singer Cassie Gaines.
The film will detail the tragic events through the eyes of Pyle, who is set to co-produce and co-write the film with director Jared Cohn (The Horde), with the drummer stating that: “This film’s story — MY story — is not just about the plane crash but also about my personal relationship with the genius that was Ronnie Van Zant, whom I loved like a brother and still miss to this day.”
Production on Free Bird is set to get underway this summer.
