Peacock’s upcoming MacGruber series has just cast some pretty high-profile names as Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), Laurence Fishburne (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum) and Mickey Rourke (War Pigs) join the eight-episode series.
MacGruber will see Will Forte reprise his Saturday Night Live character of MacGruber alongside his SNL co-star Kristen Wiig (Wonder Woman 1984) and Ryan Phillippe (Shooter). They will reprise their roles from the 2010 MacGruber film as Vicki St. Elmo and Dixon Piper respectively.
Elliott will play as Perry, MacGruber’s father. “Though they’ve drifted apart over the years, MacGruber will need his father’s sage guidance if he hopes to succeed.”
Fishburne is General Barrett Fasoose, “a highly decorated soldier who commands the respect of the entire US military. In addition to his illustrious career, he is currently married to MacGruber’s ex-wife, Vicki St. Elmo.”
Rourke will be the film’s villain, Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth, who “is one of MacGruber’s mortal enemies. Long thought dead, he has resurfaced to carry out a heinous plot to destroy the world, and in the process, claim his revenge against MacGruber.”
Forte, Jorma Taccone and John Solomon will write and executive produce with Taccone directing the series. Lorne Michaels, John Goldwyn, Andrew Singer and Erin David will also serve as executive producers.
Originally a Saturday Night Live parody of the TV series MacGyver, the MacGruber movie was released in 2010 and quickly became a cult favourite despite tanking at the box office with just $9.3 million from its theatrical release.
After rotting in prison for over a decade, America’s ultimate hero and uber patriot MacGruber (Forte) is finally released. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth. With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must race against time to defeat the forces of evil — only to find that evil… may be lurking within.
