Multi-award-winning artist Madonna is set to direct, co-write and produce her own untitled biopic based on her life and career for Universal Pictures.
According to Variety, Madonna will co-write the script with Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno) and produce alongside Amy Pascal – who she worked with on 1992’s A League of Their Own. Pascal will produce the film through her Universal-based Pascal Pictures banner with Sara Zambreno and Guy Oseary serving as executive producers. A production timeline and casting details haven’t been announced as of yet.
As a director, Madonna previously helmed Filth & Wisdom in 2008, as well as the 2011 romantic drama W.E. Madonna also wrote, produced and narrated the 2008 documentary I Am Because We Are, which focused on the children of Malawi who have been orphaned as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
However, as an artist, Madonna is certified as the best-selling female music artist in history after selling 335 million records worldwide, as well as remaining the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time, and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a statement. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
“This movie is an absolute labor of love for me,” Pascal added. “I have known Madonna since we made ‘A League of Their Own’ together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”
