Maggie Gyllenhaal is going to harness her powers to finally bring the Bride of Frankenstein to life for Netflix, and she might be bringing her The Dark Knight co-star Christian Bale along to headline.
There have been so many attempts to re-start the heart on a reimaging of James Whale’s 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein. Bill Condon’s Angelina Jolie-headlined adaptation was aborted during preliminary photography following the failure of Universal’s short-lived Dark Universe, while David Koepp (Jurassic Park) has spoken about a modern interpretation he has written for the studio, and there were even reports of a Scarlett Johansson-led take on the tale-of-terror from A24 and Apple.
Now comes word from World of Reel (via Production Weekly) that Maggie Gyllenhaal will follow-up her critically-acclaimed directorial-debut The Lost Daughter by helming Bride for Netflix, and that she has enlisted Penelope Cruz, Christian Bale and Peter Sarsgaard to star.
A sequel to 1931’s Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein is a masterful tale of gothic-horror and pathos that still stands the test of time, and should be on your 2023 Halloween watch-list if you’re yet to experience its dark magic.
