FX has decided to hand out a second season order to its new comedy series Man Seeking Woman. The show stars Jay Baruchel, Britt Lower, Maya Erskine and Eric André and is currently amidst its first season now.
Man Seeking Woman hasn’t thus far had strong ratings, but FX has been known to show extreme patience with its original content in the past and is once again demonstrating its support by giving the freshman series the go ahead for Season 2. The show initially opened to 326,000 total viewers but according to Deadline that dropped to 185,000 in Week 2. Now after episode 5, the first season currently averages 254,000 adults 18-34 and 353,000 adults 18-49.
The lesson… sometimes it just takes a little time to find your audience. With It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (now in its 10th Season) to serve as a model, the network clearly understands how to cultivate a viewership. The fact that every FX series over the last four years has gone to second season also serves as a strong indicator.
The original FXX comedy series Man Seeking Woman (which is the network’s very first) follows hopelessly naïve romantic Josh Greenberg (Baruchel), who goes on a desperate quest seeking love after he is dumped by his longtime girlfriend. The show was written by Simon Rich (Saturday Night Live) and is produced by FX Productions and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.
Rich serves as showrunner to the series, which is based upon his book of short stories The Last Girlfriend On Earth. Jonathan Krisel acts as exec producer alongside SNL’s Michaels and Andrew Singer.
Three episodes remain for this season of MSW, with the latest episode debuting tonight.
