The Barbie we all know and love almost had a more horror-filled start to her career as casting director Eric Dawson has revealed that Margot Robbie almost starred in a season of American Horror Story right before she emerged as one of Hollywood’s biggest talents.
Speaking with Backstage, Dawson revealed that Robbie auditioned for an undisclosed role in American Horror Story: Asylum. He looks back at when one of Hollywood’s biggest stars could’ve had a role early in her career.
Dawson notes, “Margot has a lot of ‘it’ factors. That’s the tough thing for casting directors who aren’t in the room [anymore] with actors. Margot is probably one of my favorite auditions of all time, and it was right before she broke out. She was such a star.
He recalls, “It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room. Even though she didn’t get that role, that was one of those things as a casting director where you go: This is a star; what do we do with her? Immediately, though, she was out of our realm of possibility of hiring. But that’s really the fun part of casting, is seeing the people whose careers are just rising.”
For AHS: Asylum superfans, many are trying to figure out the timeline and who Robbie could’ve played. Asylum aired from 2012 through 2013; The actress had just landed Pan Am, the short-lived series. She was still awaiting her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013.
Character-wise, Robbie most likely would’ve played the role of Grace, a patient at Briarcliff Manor, and served as an ally to Evan Peters’ Kit Walker. She was played by Lizzie Brocheré, one of the few new additions to the cast as most returned for the first AHS season, Murder House.
American Horror Story is still swinging big when it comes to casting; the upcoming twelfth season of the anthology horror season recently added reality icon Kim Kardashian to the show.
AHS Delicate stars regulars Emma Roberts, Zachary Quinto, Denis O’Hare, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd, along with newcomers Matt Czuchry, Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and Odessa A’zion.
Despite her struggles, she eventually becomes pregnant with the help of IVF, but tragedy strikes when she experiences a heartbreaking miscarriage. Plagued by the haunting belief that her baby is still alive inside her, Anna finds herself isolated in her anguish as no one else believes her harrowing claims.
Part One will arrive this Sept. 20 on FX and Sept. 21 on Hulu.
