Mark Hamill on disagreeing with Rian Johnson over Luke Skywalker’s role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

December 5, 2017 by Jordan Jones

It looks like Mark Hamill, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson had very different views for Luke Skywalker’s arc in the film. Speaking to Screen Rant at a Last Jedi press junket, the Star Wars icon gave a firm “No” when asked if his vision for Luke’s role in the film matched that of Rian Johnson’s. When pressed to go into more detail, Hamill gave this in response:

“Well, I think when I read it, it’s like the movie is just mind-bogglingly complex. It’s challenging. It’s hilarious in parts. It’s suspenseful. It’s dark and somber. I’m holding the fort down on the dark and somber. But, you know, I mean, the most shocking thing I read was it’s time for the Jedi to end. Are you… What? And I mean, I understood Luke’s regret at being wrong about who the chosen one was and he feels responsible for creating potentially the next Darth Vader and hey, I mean, ruining your nephew’s life. Like not perceiving that he was going to the Dark Side until too late, so that weighs heavily on him. But all the characters face challenges in the second act of a three-act play or opera. I mean this is where all the darkest things happened. I mean, there’s triumphs of course but more than its share of tragedies.”

It’s admirable that Mark Hamill was willing to push back if he felt that his character in The Last Jedi was being pushed in the wrong direction. After all, who has more insight into Luke Skywalker than Hamill himself? Regardless, it seems that the actor ultimately got on board, though perhaps begrudgingly. It also seems like Lucasfilm is on board too, considering the studio gave Rian Johnson an entire trilogy to play around with in the distant future.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the States and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, and Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
