According to Mark Hamill, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a slightly different ending than the one fans received. One small change, but a change that would have had great implications for Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. In an interview with Mtime, Hamill talks about this alternate ending, and how his opinion of it changed upon reading Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the first time:
“When we were doing [The Force Awakens], Rian said, ‘Oh and by the way we might have a couple of boulders floating to show your Force emanating’, so I was led to believe that I still had the Force and it was really strong in me… When I read [The Last Jedi] before VII came out, I said ‘what?” and called J.J. or Rian to say, ‘Are you guys aware of this? Have you seen a cut? Is there floating boulders?’ And they said, ‘No, we caught that and we worked it all out’.”
It would have been amazing to see boulders floating around Luke, in what would have been a pretty epic homecoming for the character. However, he is correct that this would have made Luke’s arc very strange in The Last Jedi. Now, some fans would probably have preferred this choice over the defeated Luke that we received. However, this is the price of multiple directors: everyone who sits in the director’s chair gets to leave their mark on the franchise. Love it, or hate it, at least this new ending made the choices in Star Wars: The Last Jedi feel more natural.
