In the ever-shifting landscape of theatrical releases in the era of the current global health crisis, another major blockbuster is moving its release. Thankfully, this delay is only one short month as the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home will now come out on December 17th, 2021.
The still-untitled third entry in this series will now take the spot vacated by Avatar 2 which has moved back an entire year to December 2022. The Tom Holland-led film was initially slated for July 16th, 2021, but was postponed to November 5th, 2021, earlier this year. The latest delay came late on Thursday evening after Sony announced adjusted their schedule following the shakeup of Disney’s film release calendar.
Disney has shifted every major blockbuster with its numerous Avatar and Star Wars projects all delayed by a full year apiece, and the Mulan remake being removed off the schedule altogether. The same goes for Warner Bros., which recently delayed the Christopher Nolan-directed Tenet indefinitely.
Sony Pictures does make a note that the Spider-Man 3 delay is currently only for the domestic release calendar, which raises the possibility about whether we might see a staggered release with the film keeping its November date for the global markets before arriving in North America the following month.
