Deadline is reporting that Marvel has enlisted Destin Daniel Cretton to direct its upcoming superhero movie Shang-Chi, which will be the studio’s first film to be fronted by an Asian protagonist.
Destin’s previous credits include Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle, both of which featured Captain Marvel star Brie Larson, who will also appear in his next movie Just Mercy which is headlined by another MCU veteran in Black Panther’s Michael B. Jordan.
Created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, Shang-Chi made his first appearance in Special Marvel Edition #15 back in 1973 as Marvel looked to capitalise on the success of Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon.
The movie, which is being penned by Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2), will modernize the character to avoid any stereotypes typical of the era, as Marvel looks to repeat the success of Black Panther by introducing “a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes”.
