If rumours are to be believed, ABC planned on cancelling the ratings-challenged Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last year after its fourth season, only to be blocked from doing so by Disney, who mandated a fifth season renewal.
Well, with season five now in full swing and the Avengers spinoff slipping to series lows in terms of ratings, it seems that showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurisa Tancharoen aren’t taking any chances, and are prepping the season five finale as a series finale, should it come to that.
“Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end,” the duo told TV Line. “We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way. We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted, but we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
