Marvel Studios’ Blade is looking for a new director following the news that Mogul Mowgli’s Bassam Tariq has left the eagerly awaited vampire reboot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Tariq has departed the project due to continued shifts in the production schedule for Blade, which has already seen the film move release dates on a couple of occasions, but was due to begin shooting in November in Atlanta. Whether this news has repercussions for the productions start date is unclear.
Marvel said that while Tariq is no longer the director of Blade, he will remain an executive producer on the film. The director added in his own statement that “It’s been an honour working with the wonderful folks at Marvel. We were able to put together a killer cast and crew. Eager to see where the next director takes the film.”
Marvel’s Blade reboot will see Mahershala Ali stepping into the shoes of Wesley Snipes as Eric Brooks, a dhampir whose mother was bitten and killed by a vampire while giving birth to him and who now stalks and hunts the vampire community as the Daywalker.
Ali’s Blade made his MCU debut with a voice cameo in the post-credits scene of last year’s Eternals, seemingly setting up Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman for an appearance in the film, although that is yet to be confirmed by Marvel. Definitely confirmed to star alongside Ali are Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) and Aaron Pierre (Old).
