It was only a couple of days ago that Christopher Nolan was still adding cast members to his eagerly-anticipated adaptation of epic Greek mythology The Odyssey, but now we get our first look at the film’s lead character Odysseus, played by Matt Damon.
Unveiled by the The Odyssey‘s official X account, which also underlined the film’s release date of July 17, 2026, the image depicts three-time Nolan collaborator Damon (Oppenheimer, Interstellar) as Odysseus, the Greek warrior at the heart of Homer’s epic poem, who encounters cyclops, cannibals, and sorcerers on his decade-long journey home from war.
Expect this to be the first glimpse of many, what with a huge ensemble to line-up alongside Damon that includes the newly added Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Nick Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, and Maurice Compte, who join the previously cast Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Hamish Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Jesse Garcia and Will Yun Lee.
Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new Imax film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to Imax film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.
