Matt Damon, Julianne Moore & Josh Brolin in talks for George Clooney-directed, Coen brothers-scripted Suburbicon

December 9, 2015 by William Fanelli

With George Clooney now officially committed to directing Suburbicon, it’s time to start talking about the cast of his forthcoming film. At the moment, several A-list actors including Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Josh Brolin are in negotiations for starring roles in the picture.

It was announced back in October that Clooney was in talks with TriStar to direct the “small crime drama set in the 1950s,” scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. Via Deadline, the project has since come together pretty quickly with financing secured independently and Joel Silver now onboard to produce through his Silver Pictures. If the above talks turn to deals, Suburbicon will be a Coen reunion of sorts for Damon and Moore, the former who starred in the brothers’ remake of True Grit and the latter who starred in The Big Lebowski.

As for Clooney… he and the Coen Brothers go way back. The trio worked together on the 2000 classic O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the 2003 hit Intolerable Cruelty and 2008’s Burn After Reading. Their latest collaboration, Hail, Caesar!, is a musical comedy about a 1950s Hollywood fixer who’s hired by a big studio to track down the star of their film. The movie is slated for a Feb. 2016 release and boasts an impressive cast including the above-mentioned Clooney and Brolin (the latter who also starred in True Grit) as well as Scarlett Johansson, Emily Beecham, Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, David Krumholtz, Jonah Hill, Francess McDormand, Fisher Stevens and Dolph Lundgren.

Needless to say, Suburbicon sounds very promising. The film, which will mark Clooney’s first directorial effort since 2014’s Monuments Men, is set to begin production next October.
