Matt Damon talks “post-Snowden” Bourne 5

August 28, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

While out on the promotional tour for his upcoming sci-fi film The Martian, Matt Damon has been speaking to BuzzFeed about his return as Jason Bourne in next year’s Bourne 5.

Details on the fifth film in the franchise (the fourth featuring Damon) are few and far between, but Damon has let slip that the new movie will be set in the wake of the revelations and leaks surrounding former CIA employee Edward Snowden.

“We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change…Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

Of course, this is a spy film and the newest entry will see Bourne globe-trotting once again, with the action set to take in the sights and sounds of Las Vegas and Greece, amongst others.

“We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy… And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of….” Damon continued, before trailing off to leave the rest to the imagination.

Once again directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy/The Bourne Ultimatum), Bourne 5 will see Damon star alongside the returning Julia Stiles and new recruits Alicia Vikander (Ex_Machina) and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln). It is set for release on July 26th, 2016.
