While it’s a known fact that Matt Damon is returning to play Jason Bourne, the role that solidified his status as a movie star many years ago, for the upcoming fifth installment in the Bourne series, plot details on the film have been scarce. However, during an interview with the New York Daily News to promote his new sci-fi film The Martian, Damon finally spilled some information about the film’s story.
On what fans can expect from Bourne 5, the actor said, “[Bourne] has his memory back, but that doesn’t mean he knows everything. It’s 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid. So we have to answer the questions, Where’s he been? What’s he doing? What gets him going again? So once we solved all that, then we had a movie.”
Although Damon’s brief words about the as-yet-untitled film still leave a ton of questions unanswered, it’s certainly good to at least hear the general direction the plot will be going in.
Damon starred in the first three movies in the Bourne series, 2002’s The Bourne Identity, 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy and 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, but sat it out for 2012’s Jeremy Renner-led The Bourne Legacy, so in Bourne 5 Damon will be back as Bourne after nearly a decade away from the character.
Paul Greengrass, the director of Supremacy and Ultimatum, is back at the helm for this newest installment, and is directing a cast that in addition to Damon includes Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel and Ato Essandoh. Greengrass has also penned the film’s script with Damon and Christopher Rouse. Filming began earlier this month, and the film is set to hit theaters on July 29, 2016.
