Former Doctor Who leading man Matt Smith is circling the role of notorious cult leader Charles Manson in The Family, directed by American Psycho helmer Mary Harron.
The Tracking Board reports that Smith is currently in talks for the Manson part in the film, which marks Harron’s reunion with American Psycho screenwriter Guinevere Turner.
The Family, based on a novel and a non-fiction book, will follow a grad student working with three young women who were brainwashed into being a part of Manson’s cult, who tell their story through flashbacks.
Game of Thrones star Hannah Murray, who recently appeared in Detroit, and Marianne Rendón (Imposters) are also in talks to play two of the women.
Smith will next be seen on the screen as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in Ondi Timoner’s Mapplethorpe, in which Rendón will also appear as singer Patti Smith.
As is seemingly typical in Hollywood, The Family is one of two Manson projects currently in pre-production, with the other set to be directed by Quentin Tarantino, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star.
