Christopher Nolan is wasting little time assembling the cast for his latest film Oppenheimer. Just after announcing the casting of The Boys‘ Jack Quaid, Deadline reports that Matthew Modine (Stranger Things) is also set to star in the film.
This marks the second time Modine has worked with Nolan after starring in The Dark Knight Rises, the director’s finale to his Dark Knight Trilogy. It is unknown who Modine will play in Oppenheimer.
Modine joins a cast that includes Nolan regular Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), as well as Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place Part II), Matt Damon (Stillwater), Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Endgame), Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Rami Malek (No Time to Die), Benny Safdie (Licorice Pizza), Dane DeHaan (Lisey’s Story) and the recently announced Jack Quaid (The Boys).
Oppenheimer is written by Nolan and is based upon the biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Murphy will portray Oppenheimer in the film, which charts the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. The official logline reads:
“The IMAX-shot epic thriller thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”
Oppenheimer marks Christopher Nolan’s first movie for Universal, and is set for release on July 21st, 2023.
