Matthew Vaughn says people “have had enough” of dark comic book movies

January 5, 2015 by Thomas Roach

Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to directing comic book movies having helmed Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and his latest film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, which is an adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ The Secret Service. However, it seems that Vaughn is against the idea of comic book movies being too serious, which has been the trend since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Vaughn stated: “People want fun and escapism at the moment. Look at the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. I think Nolan kick-started a very dark, bleak style of superhero escapism, and I think people have had enough of it.”

As Vaughn is currently promoting Kingsman, which is far from a serious and dark movie, it is no surprise that he would be against the idea of comic book movies being bleak and gritty. But is he right? Is it time for more fun comic book movies? Let us know your thoughts…

Kingsman: The Secret Service is set for release on February 13th, 2015 and stars Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Taron Egerton (The Smoke), Samuel L. Jackson (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Rises), Mark Strong (Kick-Ass), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sofia Boutella (StreetDance 2), Lady Gaga (Machete Kills) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars: The Force Awakens).
