Michael Bay interested in oft-delayed Spielberg project Robopocalypse, sets 6 Underground as next film

March 8, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

Steven Spielberg is a one-man movie making machine, yet despite churning out Ready Player One and The Post in quick succession, he has been unable to yank his adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s Robopocalypse from development hell.

Now it appears that he may have abandoned the idea altogether, because Empire are reporting that another director with a penchant for robots, who has worked with Spielberg before, is eyeing the project. Step forward Transformers overlord, Michael Bay.

The divisive director is in talks to adapt the tale of humanity’s struggle against a robotic uprising, which at one stage had a working script by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, LOST, The Martian), and had been on Spielberg’s schedule for years.

Meanwhile, before then, Bay will helm 6 Underground, a spec script from Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, which is due to go into production this summer for release in 2019. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

Robopocalypse will certainly be a different movie filtered through Michael Bay’s lens, so what do you think of this directorial shift? Are you fan of Bay’s bots, or would you have preferred a Spielberg take, similar to A.I.? Let us know you thoughts.

In the future, robots have been created to serve Mankind. Archos, the 14th version of an advanced Artificial Intelligence developed by the U.S. government, continuously deleted for displaying hostility towards humans, escapes from being destroyed and soon becomes a virus, downloading itself into every piece of A.I.-controlled technology in the planet, leading to a worldwide robot uprising where the humans caught in the chaos struggle to survive.
