Former Dexter and Sherlock stars Michael C. Hall and Amanda Abbington have been cast in the new drama from Netflix and Canal+, Safe. The eight-part series comes from mystery author Harlan Coben and the UK’s Shameless’ Danny Brocklehurst, who will also write the series.
Safe will see Hall as a British paediatric surgeon raising two teenage daughters, Jenny and Carrie, alone after the death of his wife. The family is seemingly safe inside a gated community when the elder daughter sneaks out to a party and a murder and disappearance follow, changing all of their lives.
Coben has written many mystery novels throughout his career, but has been moving into the television market. His first series, The Five, premiered on Sky TV in 2016.
Studiocanal’s UK-based company Red will make the series. Red president Nicola Shindler said of Safe “The serialized nature of this, and Harlan’s way of storytelling, lends itself to streaming. He’s all about the hook of a story. After The Five, he wanted to write something about family and how we build walls to keep out the bad people, but what if they’re on the inside? It’s about how far you’d go to protect your family.”
Safe started production today and will premiere on Netflix in 2018.
