Let’s meet the newest member of the “iconic musician getting a biopic” club: Michael Jackson! Deadline reports Antonine Fuqua will helm a Michael Jackson film based on the complex life of the music superstar.
John Logan will pen the script, and Graham King, the man behind the Academy Award-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, will produce the Michael film. Deadline notes GK Films and the co-executors of the Michael Jackson’s estate, John Branca & John McClain, will also produce.
The outlet says the Michael Jackson film is “a passion project for King and Logan.” They add that the filmmakers will “make the most of Jackson’s musical accomplishments and recreate seminal career highlights.” But the film will reportedly not shy away from the darker moments from the life of Michael Jackson, like his many accusations and his tragic death.
This newly announced Michael Jackson biopic will join the likes of recent outings, including the aforementioned Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Respect, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and the recently announced Amy Winehouse film Back To Black. The trend has led many to award-season glory, but many critics and audiences are exhausted. Let’s see if Antonine Fuqua can bring something new with Michael.
Fuqua is finishing The Equalizer 3 with Denzel Washington and is fresh off Emancipation, starring Will Smith. The filmmaker is best known for Training Day, Shooter, and The Equalizer.
At the time of reporting, there’s no actor attached to star as Michael Jackson.
