THR is reporting that Michael Pena (Ant-Man) and Dianne Wiest (Hannah and Her Sisters) have joined the cast of The Mule, the next film from director Clint Eastwood, which will also mark the Hollywood legend’s first on screen role since 2012’s Trouble With the Curve.
The Mule will see Eastwood playing Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who – broke, alone and facing the foreclosure of his business – is offered a simple job which turns out to be that of a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. This puts him on the radar of a DEA agent, played by Eastwood’s American Sniper star Bradley Cooper.
Pena is portraying an enforcer for the cartel, with Wiest as Stone’s ex-wife. Also featuring in the cast are Laurence Fishburne (Ant-Man and the Wasp), Alison Eastwood (Absolute Power), Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) and Ignacio Serricchio (Lost in Space).
The Mule has started production in Atlanta, with Eastwood directing from a script by Nick Schenk (Gran Torino).
