While writer and director Mike Flanagan has been developing Stephen King’s iconic horror novel Carrie into a series for several months, Amazon MGM has now officially greenlit the adaptation with the further news from Variety that Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) is the first confirmed cast member as Carrie White’s bully-turned-friend Sue Snell.
Flanagan’s Carrie is “a reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden death, Carrie finds herself contending with the challenges of attending high school, a bullying scandal and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
In the novel and subsequent adaptations, Sue Snell is one of Carrie’s initial bullies at high school, but after a particularly traumatic incident for Carrie Sue takes pity on her and befriends her, hoping to raise her spirits by having her boyfriend take Carrie to the prom instead of her.
The role of Carrie has not been filled yet, but Chucky franchise star Summer H. Howell is currently in talks to play the title role of one of King’s most recognizable characters. The series will reportedly begin production this summer in Vancouver.
“Carrie is an iconic story that has withstood the test of time with continued cultural relevance,” said Vernon Sanders, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of television. “With Mike Flanagan at the helm and the accomplished team assembled including executive producer Trevor Macy this provocative series is sure to captivate our global customers.”
Flanagan is no stranger to adapting Stephen King novels. As a self-admitted King fan, he directed The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and is currently attempting to develop a series adaptation of King’s epic The Dark Tower. His next King work is The Life of Chuck, which will be released in theatres on June 6th.
