Miles Teller knows a thing or two about playing a Navy officer, and he’ll put those skills to work again for his next big project. Deadline reports the actor will star in a remake of the classic Paramount drama An Officer and a Gentleman.
Teller is most recently known for starring opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, also from Paramount. The trade notes that the studio was interested in a new take on this IP and brought it to the actor.
Per Deadline, Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of an original draft written by Matt Johnson. It’s inspired by the original film’s script penned by Douglas Day Stewart, who was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.Taylor Hackford directed the 1982 film, which starred Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett Jr.
To say An Officer and a Gentleman was an awards contender would be putting it lightly; Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the first African-American actor to win in that category. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Actress, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. It also won Best Original Song for “Up Where We Belong,” recorded by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, and was a financial success, netting an impressive $190 million against a $7.5 million budget.
