The Flickering Myth writing team react…
We got a small teaser on Sunday and then the full trailer yesterday – we’ve got our first look at Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Tom on a plane, eh?
But what did the Flickering Myth writing staff make of it all?
Chris Cooper: Scientology won’t allow Tom Cruise to age. That’s the only reason this is possible right? It looks like everything I’d want from an Mission: Impossible film. A cool piece of escapism.
Eddy Gardiner: Looks like I’ll love it as much as Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
Scott J Davis: Looks fan-bloody-tastic. If the upward curve in quality continues, then this could be the best yet. Unless of course Cruise KILLS HIMSELF on screen in Mission: Impossible 6…
Chris Cooper: That’s the only way he’d do a death isn’t it? Bat-shit crazy he may be, but his physicality and presence is hard to top.
Manny Camacho: I’m so excited to finally see something for this film. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was an exceptionally fun movie with all of the elements that made the original great! I’m excited that this film continues where the last left off. Cruise has to be an alien, he doesn’t seem to age. I’m glad they found the right chemistry to make these movies work well. The second film was a disaster with the Hong Kong Bullet Hell tone. The third was a decent return to the original but was lacking something overall. Ghost Protocol was a perfect summer blockbuster and was a great rebooted (in a sense) concept for the franchise. Jeremy Renner was a perfect addition to the cast and it is excellent to see him return in this film. I can’t help but wonder if there is a bit of inspiration taken from the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of SHIELD vs HYDRA as this film takes on that dynamic with an Anti-IMF group. I’m loving all of it. I expect this film will be as good, if not better, than Ghost Protocol and will likely spawn a 6th film to round out a trilogy (so to speak) for Bad Robot.
Vilordsutch: It all looks rather exciting doesn’t it? Thank the Gods that Bad Robot came along and gave this dead horse the injection it needed in Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol and it’s clearly bringing spark over to Rogue Nation too.
Anthony Donovan Stokes: Him hanging on to the plans seemed very derivative of James Bond, but other then that I’m definitely going to see this in theatres. Maybe.
Oliver Davis: Looks awesome-o. Pegg was pretty heavily featured in comparison to the rest of the supporting cast (no bad thing, suggests that lighter/more comedic tone that Ghost Protocol managed so successfully). That end bit, as the plane kept on getting higher and higher, is some genuinely stomach-on-a-rollercoaster stuff. The ‘other door’ gag was its cherry on top.
Rohan Morbey: I could write ’til my battery dies as to why this is such a big deal for me. No other film this summer excited me, but when I saw Tom running across the wing of a moving plane I started clapping and smiling like a 13 year old girl at a One Direction concert.
Tom Jolliffe: This is going to be a great year for action films, particularly as it appears we have many hearkening back to the days of in camera, bat shizzle crazy, stunt work. This looks crazy and looks like it’ll hold it’s on in the year of Fast 7, Bond, Mad Max: Fury Road and Terminator: Genisys as far as beautifully choreographed carnage is concerned.
Anghus Houvouras: This has quickly jumped into my number one ‘must see film’ of the summer. The Mission: Impossible series continues to be the kind of fun, over the top action series that feels like a rarity in this CG heavy eye gouge comic book movies. There is still something thrilling about the ‘against all odds’ action hero. Cruise, for my money, is still the most engaging icon in the big budget genre. That final shot of him clinging to the plane is a great metaphor for this stage of his career: hes hanging on for dear life and willing to do whatever is required to win the day, or in this case, the audience.
Chris Cooper: The plane rising up…and up…and up. It’s crazy! There will always be a certain magic about the real actor being in the real situation. Good on ya Tom.
Rohan Morbey: On IMAX it’s gonna look amazing…
Luke Owen: I may be more excited for movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World, but this is a bloody good trailer. Looking forward to the whole film!
Tom Jolliffe: This certainly looks like it could potentially be even better than the last, which would put it right up there as potentially the action spectacular to beat this year. It certainly does look tighter than Fast & Furious 7 (which looks the most bonkers film this year, but that may not translate to being good) and Terminator: Genisys could conceivably be an abomination. One thing is for sure though. Stuff is going to blow up this year. Big time.
David Fleming: With stunts like that, no one can say he doesn’t earn his paycheck. Thankfully it looks like a great film, not just a great stunt.
Eddy Gardiner: You do have to wonder what stunt he’ll pull in the next one, don’t you?
Kris Wall: It’s good but I’m not excited about it as I am things like Mad Max: Fury Road. At this point the franchise feels almost exactly the same as Fast and Furious, seeming to simply exist to be bigger, better and have crazier setpieces than the last. Oh look there’s Tom clinging on to a plane/There’s Vin Diesel driving a car out of a plane. There’s Tom Cruise climbing a tower WITH NO SAFETY NET/There’s Vin Diesel jumping a hypercar between two towers. Unfortunately for Tom, I’m much more interested in seeing a Dodge Challenger parachute out of a plane than I am about seeing an ageing actor feeling like he has something to prove by clinging to the side of a plane.
Helen Murdoch: A lot can be said about Tom Cruise but there’s no denying that he’s one of the greatest action stars of all time. Trailer looks phenomenal.
Rob James Kojder: It might be my most anticipated movie all year. Tom Cruise is the definition of movie star.
Gav Logan: It looks like any other fun, spy action thriller. I’m not a massive Cruise fan by any means but I can’t deny he is entertaining in these roles.
Ozzy Armstrong: I think this is the sort of film that Tom Cruise is just brilliant in. Very much looking forward to this beauty.
William Fanelli: Action, intensity, humour and Tom Cruise… everything I want in an action movie!

Well, for the first time since Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age of Ultron, we have an overwhelmingly positive reaction to a trailer. Certainly more postive than Ant-Man, Terminator: Genisys and Jurassic World…
