Once a planned Disney+ series, the second adventure with the loveable Moana will be released theatrically. Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the series’ footage was so impressive that they decided to make the TV show into a feature film, Moana 2, which is set to be released this November.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Iger said in a statement. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”
Dave Derrick Jr. is directing the sequel with music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, and Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film. As reported, Lin-Manuel Miranda did not pen any new songs for the project.
The passion and admiration for Moana is still there, with the original 2016 film grossing more than $680 million at the box office. But it would be on Disney+, where the movie found new life, clocking in 1 billion hours streamed last year.

Per the release, Moana 2 will take viewers on an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Moana 2 is set to be released on November 27th, 2024.
