Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is going to find himself going up against one of his oldest foes in the upcoming tenth series of Doctor Who, with the BBC announcing that the original Mondasian Cybermen are returning to the show for an appearance in the two-part series finale.
The Mondasian Cybermen made their debut in ‘The Tenth Planet’, the final serial for William Hartnell’s First Doctor. The inhabitants of Mondas, Earth’s twin planet, the cloth-faced Cybermen had cybernetically augmented their bodies in order to survive the increasingly cold temperature of their home planet. Their goal was to destroy Earth, and have Mondas take its place in the solar system.
Back in 2014, Capaldi revealed at a Q&A that he would love to see the return of the Mondasian Cybermen, stating that: “They were absolutely terrifying, with cloth faces. That was really creepy.”
Well, Capaldi will now get his wish in his final story before the 2017 Christmas Special, at which point both he and showrunner Steven Moffat will depart the series.
Doctor Who series 10 gets underway on Saturday, April 15th.
