When Mr. Robot returns for its fourth season, it will be its last. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed USA Network has decided to cancel the series, ending it with its fourth season in 2019. The show, which is headlined by Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek, is currently in pre-production for a 12-episode season.
The series follows Malek’s Elliot Alderson, a hacker who is recruited into an anarchist hackivist group led by a hacker known only as Mr. Robot, played by Christian Slater. Production on the series is set to begin in the winter in New York after having been split into two writing schedules to account for creator Sam Esmail’s other series for Amazon, Homecoming with Julia Roberts. A fifth season was discussed, but USA and Esmail decided to end it with its fourth season rather than continue, though Esmail had planned for the series to conclude with either a fourth or fifth season.
“When I first created the world of Mr. Robot, I thought it would be a niche television series with a small, cult following,” said Esmail. “Over the past three years, it has become so much more, and I am continually humbled by the show’s recognition and by the amazing cast and crew that work tirelessly to help bring my vision to life. Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending. Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story. To fans of the show: thank you for the past three years, and I can’t wait to share this exciting final season with you.”
Mr. Robot features a cast that includes Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallstrom, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer, Bobby Cannavale, and BD Wong.
