While the last Muppets show did not fare well and was cancelled after only one season ABC, Disney has not given up on Kermit and the gang. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney will reboot The Muppets for its upcoming streaming service.
The previous Muppets series aired on ABC in 2015 and was in the vein of 30 Rock and The Office, showing the behind the scenes of The Muppet’s late-night talk show and the shenanigans Kermit had to deal with. The show, however, was panned by critics and fans alike, resulting in its cancellation. Disney is currently searching for a writer for the new Muppets series.
Disney is hoping to make a streaming service that will compete with Netflix, moving all their properties onto the family-friendly service and creating many new series or rebooting several old ones. Along with The Muppets, Disney is said to be interesting in rebooting High School Musical for TV as well as making a Monster’s Inc. show and a TV series of The Mighty Ducks with Steven Brill, the writer of all three original films, developing the show.
Disney is also working on several Star Wars series for the streaming service, at least one of them being live action. The launch date for this service hasn’t been announced yet, but will go live sometime in 2019.
