Mystery novelist and amateur super sleuth Jessica Fletcher is heading to the big screen, with Variety reporting that Universal Pictures is developing a feature film adaptation of the classic CBS crime drama series Murder, She Wrote.
The film is being produced by Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Little Women) and had set screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Dumb Money) to pen the script in deals made pre-strike action.
Running for twelve seasons between 1984 and 1996, Murder, She Wrote featured Angela Lansbury in her iconic role as Jessica Fletcher, a retired teacher and successful mystery novel writer who assists the authorities in solving the many, many murders in the small coastal community of Cabot Cove.
A potential TV reboot of Murder, She Wrote was previously in the works at NBC a decade ago, with Octavia Spencer lined up to take on the lead role. However, the project failed to move forward.
Work on the script for Universal’s Murder, She Wrote is currently on hold due to the WGA strike, and so as yet there’s no word as to when we might expect the film to begin moving forward.
