It looks like Neill Blomkamp’s RoboCop ambitions have gone the way of his planned Alien sequel, with the District 9 filmmaker revealing on Twitter that he is no longer attached to direct RoboCop Returns due to scheduling issues with MGM.

RoboCop Returns was first announced back in July of last year and would have been a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 action sci-fi classic, with Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) rewriting an old script from the late 80s by original RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner.
Blomkamp had been keen to bring back Peter Weller as the former Alex Murphy, although Weller reportedly turned down the opportunity to reprise the role for the first time since 1990’s RoboCop 2.
Given Blomkamp’s comments, it seems that MGM may still be keen on moving forward under another director, and so perhaps we’ll get some word on a potential replacement in the coming weeks. And if not, perhaps Blomkamp could find himself back on board when he completes his latest film?
