Back in 2015, District 9 filmmaker Neil Blomkamp shared some concept art for a proposed Alien movie, which would have been a sequel to 1986’s Aliens, bringing back characters such as Ripley, Hicks and Newt. The concept art caused some excitement, and ultimately led to Fox putting the movie into development with Blomkamp at the helm.
As it turned out, Blomkamp’s Alien fell apart as Ridley Scott decided to continue the franchise himself with Alien: Covenant, with Blomkamp subsequently stating that the project was “totally dead”.
So, as Ridley continues to tease his next instalment – which will apparently “drift away from the alien stuff” in favour of A.I. – Blomkamp has once again teased what might have been with two pieces of concept art featuring a xenomorph and a dropship…

Although Ridley Scott still has ambitions within the Alien universe, the future of the franchise remains up in the air at present. After the disappointing box office performance of Alien: Covenant, Fox was yet to give the go ahead to another instalment, and with the franchise now heading to Disney, it remains to be seen whether the Mouse House has any interest in continuing the series, or perhaps starting afresh. Who knows – maybe we will get to see Blomkamp’s vision one day after all…
