NES Classic hacked to allow 84 games

January 10, 2017 by Jordan Jones

One of the biggest complaints people have had about the NES Classic (aside from the short wire length of the controllers), has been the finite number of 30 games pre-loaded onto the system. As it stands, Nintendo has no plans to offer software updates to load more games onto the system. That’s it. The NES Classic is a standalone device, which is truly a rarity these days. Once you have had your fill of those 30 pre-loaded games, there really is no incentive to turn the system back on. Of course, it was only a matter of time before someone found a way around that:

What your seeing is a Russian hacker called “Madmonkey” taking advantage of an exploit involving a Super Mario Bros. save file, allowing for a plethora of new games, like Battletoads:

… and Tetris:

There is a tutorial available on Reddit, detailing how to hack your own NES Classic. However, just like any smartphone jailbreak, do so at your own risk.
