Netflix announces new Ultraman anime series

July 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As well as revealing the premiere date of the second season of Castlevania, Netflix dropped another big announcement at Anime Expo this week with the streaming service set to unveil a new 3D CG anime series based upon Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi’s Ultraman manga.

Ultraman is being directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, Napping Princess) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Harlock: Space Pirate, Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars), with the producers including Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Sola Digital Arts (Appleseed Alpha).

The series is set to arrive in 2019 and will be based on the 12th volume of the Ultraman manga, which is described as follows:

Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined Shin Hayata of the Scientific Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters known as Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero – a new kind of Ultraman…

Shinjiro is an ordinary teenager, but his father is the legendary Shin Hayata. When he learns that his father passed on the “Ultraman Factor” to him, and that he possesses incredible powers, nothing will ever be the same again.
