You hear that? That’s the hearts of 80s kids out there knowing that the iconic The Real Ghostbusters and its Extreme sequel are no longer the only animated shows in the franchise.
Variety reports Netflix has ordered and greenlit a new Ghostbusters animated series from Sony Pictures Animation. While it was first announced in 2022, the first real steps have now been taken, with Elliott Kalan joining the project as a writer and executive producer.
Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. are onboard as executive producers. The pair recently co-wrote the live-action features Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, with Reitman directing the former and Kenan helming the latter.
Little is known about the plot at the time of writing, although Variety notes that this take will be a “3D animated series” and could be closer in tone to the recent Ghostbusters films.
For those unfamiliar with Elliott Kalan, he’s best known as the head writer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. During his tenure, the writing team received seven consecutive Emmy nominations for best writing for a variety series, winning four. Cult film fans will know him for his work as the head writer of the Netflix revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Per the outlet, “production on the series will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.”
