In what must be the pre-production equivalent of that Grandpa Simpson meme, no sooner had it been revealed that Nancy Meyers’ was set to make a $130 million rom-com starring Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson, it turns out Netflix have already decided to pull-the-plug on the movie citing…..wait for it….budgetary reasons.
It was reported only last week that the legendary What Women Want and Something’s Gotta Give director had assembled the impressive cast, and would write, direct and produce the romantic-comedy.
Fast forward to today and Deadline has revealed that Meyers and the streaming-service have parted company due to the fact they were at a crossroads over the reported $130 million budget for the film, which was tentatively titled Paris Paramount.
Sources for Deadline said that the studio were fine with $130 million budget, but that Meyers was pushing for something in the region of $150 million, with $80 million of that going to above-the-line costs.
George Clooney and Julia Roberts’ Ticket to Paradise proved with its $170 million worldwide gross that there is still a desire to see old-school rom-coms, so there is a chance that another studio picks up the bill somewhere down the line.
