While the award season heats up, one thing seems set in stone, and that is a nomination for Chadwick Boseman in either of his two films this year for Netflix.
Before his passing, Boseman completed Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, both awards contenders in their own right. It seems now like Netflix has made it clear that they will campaign for Boseman to get a posthumous nomination in the Best Actor category for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Boseman stars, alongside other awards contender Viola Davis as Ma Rainey’s very ambitious trumpeter Levee. Netflix has also entered Davis into the race for the Best Actress category while the rest of the cast, including Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, and Taylour Paige, will all campaign in the supporting categories.
As noted by multiple sources, there’s only been one film in the long history of the Academy Awards to receive more than two Black acting nominations, and that was for 1985’s The Color Purple.
Boseman’s work in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods will also be considered in the Best Supporting Actor category. Could the late star see posthumous nominations in both the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories?
