The BBC has announced that the very first trailer for the upcoming eleventh series of Doctor Who is set to air this Sunday during the World Cup final between France and Croatia, while further additional footage will also debut at the San Diego Comic-Con International this coming Thursday.
Series eleven of Doctor Who will mark the first for Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, as well as the first for new showrunner Chris Chibnall, who has explained to EW why he was keen to follow Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor with the first female incarnation of the iconic Time Lord.
“I just felt the time was right,” said Chibnall. “I think if the show hadn’t done it, we would have been behind the world, and Doctor Who has got to be out front leading the world, and being a great example of all the amazing things that are in the world. So, it wasn’t even a question in my mind.”
Whittaker also briefly commented on her role and whether she felt any pressure about portraying a female Doctor, stating that: “There’s no rules, and it’s liberating. But it’s equally terrifying.”
