Nick Offerman (The Last of Us) and Betty Gilpin (GLOW) have joined Netflix’s historical drama Death by Lightning, according to Variety. The series will recount the assassination of U.S. President James Garfield.
Offerman and Gilpin join Matthew Macfayden (Succession) and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) in the series, which will “tell the story of U.S. President James Garfield (Shannon) and his assassination by Charles Guiteau (Macfadyen).” Death By Lightning is based on the novel Destiny Of The Republic by Candice Millard.
Offerman will play U.S. Vice President Chester A. Arthur, who succeeded Garfield following his assassination, while Gilpin will be Crete Garfield, President Garfield’s wife and the First Lady.
Death by Lightning is created by Mike Makowsky, who will executive produce alongside Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss with Bernie Caufield. Directing the series will be Matt Ross (Gaslit), who will also executive produce.
