James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has found its Man of Steel, and it seems like he’s been the chosen one for a while.
David Corenswet has been on the minds of Superman fans for quite some time; in 2019, Corenswet promoted the Netflix series Hollywood and was asked about Superman. The fan castings began then, and the actor addressed how he wanted to see the character handled.
“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me. But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman,” Corenswet told EW then. “I would love to see somebody do an upbeat throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”
Given Gunn’s brand of humor and Warner Bros. Discovery’s desperate want for anything opposite of the DCEU, the actor will likely get his wish for something a bit lighter in tone.
David Corenswet was recently cast in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who will star as Lois Lane. Little is known about the project, but reports claim we will see Superman face off with The Authority in a world already familiar with superheroes.
The official synopsis states Superman: Legacy “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
