Weinstein Television has announced that it has tapped Oliver Stone to direct the first season of the upcoming drama series Guantanamo, which will mark Stone’s first foray into TV directing.
The show, which has been created by Daniel Voll (The Unit), is set to revolve around the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba, which was established in 2002 by the U.S. to house detainees from the War on Terror. It will focus on the detainees themselves, along with the soldiers, lawyers, doctors, journalists and civilians at the naval base.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to work with Oliver,” said Harvey Weinstein. “I’m a longtime fan and he’s one of our greatest filmmakers of all time. This is explosive material that will work from all sides. Daniel Voll’s incredible resume will make this amazing collaboration between him and Oliver both newsworthy and super watchable.”
“Oliver and I are excited about creating an immersive, highly cinematic series, filled with twists and turns, that explores the dark side of how America prosecutes its war on terror,” added Voll.
