Olivia Colman to star in Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light

April 7, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Sam Mendes has chosen his first film since 1917 snared 10 Oscar nominations and $314 million at the worldwide box-office, and it looks as though fellow Academy-Award botherer Olivia Colman is set to join him for Empire of Light.

Deadline reports that the Skyfall director has teamed with Searchlight Pictures to bring to life a script that Mendes himself has written which focuses on a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.

Olivia Colman, who is currently earning her standard rave reviews for her performance in The Father is in negotiations to star, while legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins is reteaming with the director who earned him an Academy Award on 1917.

Although details are scant on the film itself, it does sound as though Empire of Light has all of the ingredients to fill a few envelopes come awards season. Let us know what you think by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
