Orphan Black: Echoes cancelled after single season

September 19, 2024 by Ricky Church

Bad news for fans of Orphan Black: Echoes as the Krysten Ritter-led spin-off has been cancelled after a single season.

The series was a sequel spin-off to Orphan Black, which starred She-Hulk‘s Tatiana Maslany in several roles as women who discover they are clones of each other in a global conspiracy and attempt to dismantle it in order to save their lives and protect their families.

Orphan Black: Echoes takes place nearly 40 years after the original series and features Ritter as an amnesiac women named Lucy who meets Kira, the daughter of Maslany’s Sarah Manning, who has grown up to become a scientist. They try to piece together Lucy’s life and uncover a new conspiracy. The series premiered in June and concluded its first season just under a month ago.

One reason AMC has Orphan Black: Echoes after its single season is because it struggled to maintain the strong and devoted audience the original Orphan Black had during its five season run. Combined with some of the lackluster reviews the show received from both critics and fans, it seemed the writing was on the wall for the spin-off.

Set in the near future, the spin-off takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence. It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unraveling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.

Orphan Black: Echoes stars Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard), Amanda Fix (High School), Avan Jogia (Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City),Ria Kihlstedt (Nowhere), Reed Diamond (Homicide) and Hiroyuki Liao (Unforgettable).
