A sequel to Girls Trip has been in development ever since the 2017 comedy made $140 million at the worldwide box-office, and now the girls have been given the green-light to reunite with the news that Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish are set to return for a sequel.
The news was broken by writer-producer Tracy Oliver, who was attending the Sundance Film Festival to promote the latest season of her TV series Harlem, where she revealed to Variety that “it’s officially happening. I can say that,” adding that even though the film’s producer Will Packer “might kill me, we’re looking to set it in Ghana.”
Written by Tracy Oliver and Kenya Barris (You People), and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Night School), Girls Trip was a critical and commercial success, with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and $140 million in the bank against a budget of just $19 million. It told the story of four lifelong friends who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, where sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s plenty of dancing, drinking, romancing and laughs.
