As reported in Variety, Universal is eyeing Call Me by Your Name‘s Luca Guadagnino to direct a retelling of Scarface for the studio.
At the time of reporting, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen wrote the latest version of the script. Earlier drafts of this Scarface remake came from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman, and Paul Attanasio, while Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and David Ayer (Suicide Squad) have both been attached to direct at various points.
The mob kingpin story has been brought to the screen on two occasions in 1932 and 1983. The latter saw Brian DePalma direct what many consider a classic that starred Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. This new version will reimagine the core immigrant story told in both films and will see Los Angeles as the setting.
Luca Guadagnino most recently helmed a remake of the iconic horror film Suspiria for Amazon Studios, which starred Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton. Before that, Guadagnino directed the Academy Award-winning drama Call Me by Your Name, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
The filmmaker is currently awaiting the release of an HBO limited series We Are Who We Are, which stars Alice Braga and Kid Cudi. He is also developing a remake of Lord of the Flies for Warner Bros.
