Paramount Pictures are working on yet another remake of popular prison sports comedy The Longest Yard.
According to Deadline the studio, who released both the Burt Reynolds 1974 version and the 2005 Adam Sandler remake, have tapped Rodney Barnes (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) to write the script for the film.
Directed by Robert Aldrich, The Longest Yard starred Burt Reynolds as disgraced former NFL star Paul “Wrecking” Crewe, who is sentenced to 18-months in prison, where he is forced by the warden to organise a team of inmates to play against his own line-up of guards. The film was a huge box-office hit at the time, earning $43 million at the domestic box-office.
Reynolds returned for the Adam Sandler headlined remake, which also starred Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly, and William Fichtner. It featured a similar plot in which the Uncut Gems actor plays a washed-up former professional quarterback who, in exchange for a reduced prison sentence, puts together a football team to play against the guards. The Peter Segal-directed film was also a box-office smash, grossing $191 million worldwide.
